The Division of Vascular Surgery at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is the national referral centre for arterial, venous, and lymphatic diseases. It provides evidence-based surgical and endovascular care focused on restoring circulation, preventing limb loss, and enhancing quality of life while advancing vascular excellence through training and research.

This is a specialist service. Patients are required to be referred by their family doctor, district health facility, or through the GPHC Outpatient Department.

  • Outpatient and Inpatient Services
    • Specialist vascular consultations and diagnostic evaluation.
    • Follow-up and wound care for vascular patients.
    • Vascular access planning and creation for haemodialysis.
    • Postoperative surveillance for grafts, stents, and fistulas.
  • Surgical and Endovascular Procedures
    • Creation and revision of arteriovenous fistulas and grafts.
    • Peripheral bypass surgery for limb ischaemia.
    • Carotid endarterectomy for stroke prevention.
    • Aneurysm repair (open and hybrid techniques).
    • Vascular trauma repair and reconstruction.
    • Varicose vein surgery and venous interventions.
    • Catheter-directed thrombolysis and embolectomy.
    • Endovenous and minimally invasive procedures, where feasible.
  • Emergency and Support Services
    • 24-hour vascular surgical coverage for trauma, dialysis access complications, acute limb ischaemia, and bleeding emergencies.
    • Support to other surgical teams in complex cases involving major vessels.
    • Postoperative and critical-care collaboration with the ICU and anaesthesia teams.

Dr. Carlos Martin
Head of Department

Dr. Carlos Martin is a Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon and Head of the Vascular Division at GPHC. He leads efforts to build Guyana’s first fully developed vascular service, prioritizing limb salvage, dialysis access, and life-saving vascular care. His work reflects a commitment to mentorship, innovation, and service that improves patients’ lives across Guyana. 

The division is led by Consultant Vascular Surgeons, supported by a skilled multidisciplinary team that includes:
