The Department of Transplant Department is committed to delivering transplant services to individuals requiring kidney transplantation as well as vascular procedures needed for patients requiring dialysis. Our objective is to provide compassionate, patient-centered care throughout all phases of the transplant process, commencing with initial evaluation and extending through post-transplant follow-up. Our aim is to uphold the highest standards of medical excellence, safety, and support for patients and their families.

This is a specialist service. Patients are required to be referred by their nephrologist, district health facility, or through the GPHC Outpatient Department.

    Patients pre-op, intra-op and post-op assessment and care with close monitoring of blood work, kidney function and dispensing of vital immunosuppressants for optimal outcome.

    Assessment with counseling of patients on type of dialysis access and their care.

Dr. Kishore Persaud
Head of Department | Consultant in Multi-Organ Transplant and Vascular Surgery

Dr. Kishore Persaud is a Consultant in Multi-Organ Transplant and Vascular Access Surgery. After completing postgraduate training in General Surgery, he pursued subspecialty training in Transplant Surgery at the University of Calgary. Since returning to Guyana, Dr. Persaud has led the establishment and growth of the Transplant Department at GPHC and was instrumental in shaping Guyana’s organ donation and transplantation legislation. He coordinated and performed the first renal transplant carried out entirely by locally trained surgeons at GPHC. Further advancing transplant innovation in the region, Dr. Persaud performed the first paired exchange transplant in both Guyana and the Caribbean, as well as the region’s first transplant chain. He also introduced laparoscopic donor nephrectomy at the Georgetown Public Hospital—maintaining a 0% conversion rate to open surgery to date.
