Thoracic Surgery

The Department of Thoracic Surgery provides safe, timely, and standardized operative and perioperative care for patients with chest diseases. This includes the surgical management of lung cancer, mediastinal tumors, esophageal disease, chest wall pathology, thoracic infections, pleural disorders, and thoracic trauma. As the only dedicated thoracic surgery service in the country, the department upholds the highest standards of surgical excellence, multidisciplinary collaboration, and compassionate, patient-centered care.

    • Continuous monitoring in HDU/ICU as needed.
    • Chest tube management and pulmonary hygiene.
    • Pain control using regional blocks, epidural analgesia, and multimodal strategies.
    • Early mobilization and respiratory physiotherapy.
    • Discharge planning and postoperative education.

    • Oncology boards for lung and esophageal cancer.
    • Joint management of complex trauma with emergency and ICU teams.

Our Team's Expertise

Dr. Cheetanand Mahadeo
Head of Section

Dr. Cheetanand Mahadeo has led the Thoracic Surgery Service since its inception in January 2019. A general surgeon with a Thoracic Surgery Fellowship from McMaster University, he is a Fellow of the Caribbean, International, and American Colleges of Surgeons. He also holds memberships in ESTS and ERS and a Master’s degree in Respiratory Medicine.

    Specialists with advanced training in complex thoracic procedures, including minimally invasive surgery (VATS), oncologic resections, airway surgery, mediastinal disease, and thoracic trauma. They lead both elective and emergency thoracic operations and manage referrals from all regions of Guyana.
