The Department of Paediatrics at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is the national referral centre for neonatal and child health in Guyana. It delivers compassionate, evidence-based inpatient and outpatient care—from intensive neonatal services to management of chronic and developmental conditions—ensuring every child receives the highest standard of care.

Inpatient Services

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

    The NICU provides high-acuity care for premature and critically ill newborns, equipped with advanced incubators, ventilators, and monitoring systems.

  • Step-Down Unit (SDU)

    The SDU provides ongoing care for improving neonates who no longer require intensive support but still need monitoring.

  • Postnatal Ward

    The Postnatal Ward provides care and assessments for newborns rooming-in with their mothers after delivery.

  • Paediatric Medicine Ward

    This ward manages a wide range of acute and complex childhood conditions, including respiratory, gastrointestinal, infectious, haematologic, and neurological illnesses.

  • Paediatric High Dependency Unit (PHDU)

    The PHDU and and Critical Care Services provide advanced monitoring and therapy for children who are too ill for the general ward but do not require full intensive care.

Outpatient Paediatric Clinic

  • Follow-up and Preventive Services

    The outpatient clinic provides evaluation, follow-up, and preventive services for infants and children.

  • Intervention and Disease Management

    Focus on early intervention and chronic disease management helps reduce avoidable hospital admissions.

Chronic Disease and Specialty Clinics

  • Respiratory Clinic

    Long-term management of asthma and chronic lung disease, including inhaler technique review and environmental education.

  • Neurology Clinic

    Management of epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and neuromuscular disorders with multidisciplinary rehabilitation support.

  • Haematology/Oncology Clinic

    Comprehensive care for sickle cell disease, thalassaemia, and childhood haematologic cancers — including chemotherapy, transfusion protocols, and prophylaxis

  • Endocrinology Clinic

    Treatment of diabetes, thyroid disease, and metabolic disorders with emphasis on family education.

  • Cardiology Clinic

    Monitoring of congenital and acquired heart conditions in collaboration with visiting cardiologists for diagnostic and surgical planning.

  • Neonatology Follow-Up Clinic

    Long-term developmental and nutritional follow-up for high-risk infants, including screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) and hearing impairment.

  • Nephrology Clinic

    Management of chronic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, and glomerulonephritis with focus on blood-pressure and electrolyte control.

  • Allergy Clinic

    Diagnosis and treatment of atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and food or drug allergies.

  • Gastroenterology Clinic

    Care for GERD, IBD, malabsorption, and chronic constipation with dietetic support.

  • Developmental Clinic

    Early screening and intervention for developmental delays, behavioural issues, and autism-spectrum disorders, with access to psychology, physiotherapy, and speech therapy.

Our Team's Expertise

Dr. Sara Singh
Head of Department

Dr. Sara Singh, Paediatrician and Acting Head of Paediatrics at GPHC, has nearly 15 years’ experience, including nine in neonatology. She has strengthened neonatal and paediatric services, led quality-of-care improvements, and supports multidisciplinary teams across the NICU, PHDU, clinics, and wards. Currently pursuing a Master’s in Neonatology, she is committed to compassionate, evidence-based care and developing future paediatric leaders.

  • Consultant Paediatricians

    Specialists in general paediatrics, neonatology, and paediatric sub-disciplines including nephrology, haematology/oncology, and cardiology.

  • Residents and Medical Officers

    Deliver daily care across wards and clinics under consultant supervision.

  • NICU-Trained Nurses

    Skilled in neonatal resuscitation, monitoring, ventilatory support, and infection prevention.

  • Pharmacists, Dietitians, and Physiotherapists

    Provide integrated support to optimise recovery and growth.

  • Social Workers

    Support families in psychosocial adjustment, discharge planning, and community reintegration.
