The Respirology Unit at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) offers specialised care for patients with lung and breathing-related conditions. We provide both inpatient and outpatient services. Our aim is to ensure accurate diagnosis, compassionate care, and clear communication throughout each patient’s journey.

Visit our Outpatient Clinic, located on the ground floor at the medical clinic.

This is a specialist service. Patients are required to be referred by their family doctor, district health facility, or through the GPHC Outpatient Department.

  • Comprehensive Respiratory Assessment
    • Review of symptoms, lung function, imaging, exposures, and medical history to determine the cause of breathing difficulties.
  • Management of Respiratory Conditions
    • Asthma
    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
    • Pneumonia and other lung infections
    • Tuberculosis and post-TB lung disease
    • Interstitial lung diseases (e.g., pulmonary fibrosis)
    • Pulmonary hypertension
    • Occupational and environmental lung diseases
    • Lung cancer (diagnosis, staging support, and co-management with oncology and thoracic surgery)
  • Pulmonary Diagnostic Services
    • Pulse oximetry and arterial blood gas analysis
    • Chest imaging review (X-ray, CT scans)
    • Sputum and microbiology evaluation
  • Procedural care
    • Non-invasive ventilation (BiPAP/CPAP)
    • Oxygen therapy initiation and monitoring
    • Bronchoscopy through collaboration with thoracic surgery

Dr. Cedel Thom-Fernandes
Head of Section

Dr. Thom-Fernandes completed her Master’s in Internal Medicine/Infectious Disease before pursuing a fellowship in Adult Respirology at McMaster University. She specialises in diagnosing and managing asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, lung infections, and other complex respiratory, strong multidisciplinary approach, providing evidence-based, patient-centred care supported by advanced clinical training and a commitment to improving lung health.
