Orthopaedic Team at GPHC Surpasses Surgical Target, Completing 28 Joint Replacement Surgeries in Three Days
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation continues to make major strides in reducing the backlog of patients awaiting joint replacement surgeries, procedures that often cost up to GYD $2.5 million each in the private sector. As part of this national effort, the hospital’s Orthopaedic Team has now completed an impressive 136 joint replacement surgeries for the year, all performed locally by Guyanese specialists.
From Friday, November 7, to Sunday, November 9, 2025, the team successfully completed 28 joint replacement surgeries, surpassing their original target of 27.
Led by Dr Kaaleshwar Ramcharran, the dedicated team of orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, physiotherapotherapists, nurses, and theatre staff carried out 18 knee replacements and 10 hip replacements, bringing life-changing relief to 22 female and 6 male patients. Many of these individuals have been living with chronic pain, reduced mobility, and long waits for care, making this special three-day initiative especially impactful.
Importantly, all surgeries were conducted at GPHC by Guyanese medical professionals, demonstrating the hospital’s expanding capacity to deliver high-quality, specialized services at no direct cost to patients.
This achievement underscores GPHC’s commitment to improving surgical access, enhancing patient outcomes, and steadily shortening waiting lists for essential orthopaedic care. All patients from last weekend’s initiative have been discharged and are expected to continue their recovery at home.
The management of GPHC extends heartfelt appreciation to the Orthopaedic Team for their unwavering dedication, skill, and compassion in delivering transformative care to the people of Guyana.
