Jamaica’s Prime Minister Witnesses Robotic Surgery at GPHC
As Guyana Advances Healthcare Innovation in the Caribbean
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on 26 June, 2026, welcomed Honourable Andrew Michael Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, and Jamaica’s Minister of Health for a firsthand look at Guyana’s growing capabilities in advanced healthcare, including the hospital’s robotic-assisted surgery programme.
The visit underscores increasing regional recognition of Guyana’s investment in modern healthcare and highlights the country’s emergence as a destination for medical innovation within the Caribbean. By observing a live robotic-assisted surgical procedure, the Jamaican delegation gained insight into the technological advancements that are transforming surgical care at GPHC and improving patient outcomes.
Chief Executive Officer of GPHC, Mr. Robbie Rambarran, said the visit demonstrates the confidence that CARICOM leaders have in Guyana’s healthcare transformation.
“When you look at what we are doing through the lens of modern technology and advanced surgical practice, having the Prime Minister of a CARICOM nation witness it firsthand speaks volumes. It reflects the progress Guyana has made and opens the door for even greater collaboration in healthcare development between our countries,” Mr. Rambarran said.
He further noted that regional interest in Guyana’s healthcare advancements continues to grow. He recalled that during the official launch of the robotic surgery programme on 26 May, 2026, The Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, also attended and endorsed Guyana’s bold investment in modern healthcare.
The visits by two CARICOM Prime Ministers within a short period signal Guyana’s growing influence in regional healthcare and reinforce the country’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies that improve access to specialised medical care.
Beyond strengthening healthcare delivery locally, these engagements create opportunities for greater collaboration in clinical training, knowledge sharing and the continued advancement of medical services across the Caribbean.
