Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation Moves Towards Digital Transformation with National Electronic Health Record System

On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, the Ministry of Health signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Riomed Limited to implement the National Electronic Health Record system in Guyana. This initiative represents a major milestone in the digital transformation of the country’s healthcare sector.

The 18-month contract with Riomed Limited, a UK-registered company, is supported by USD 3.3 million in funding from the Inter-American Development Bank. This investment highlights the government’s commitment to modernising healthcare delivery, improving patient outcomes, increasing efficiency, and strengthening data-driven decision-making across health facilities nationwide.

The implementation of the Electronic Health Record system will transform how patient information is recorded, stored, and accessed throughout Guyana’s healthcare network. By digitising medical records, the system will:

  • Enhance efficiency in service delivery
  • Improve patient care through streamlined access to medical histories
  • Strengthen coordination among healthcare providers
  • Support decision-making with real-time, data-driven insights

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Riomed Director Mario Mahamed and Permanent Secretary Malcolm Watkins. The signing was witnessed by the Honourable Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Health; Jane Miller, High Commissioner of the United Kingdom; Lorena Solorzano Salazar, Inter-American Development Bank Representative; Robbie Rambarran, Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation; and other officials.

A Phased Rollout of the Electronic Health Record System

The rollout of the Electronic Health Record system will begin at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation before expanding to five primary healthcare facilities under GPHC’s administration. The system will eventually be implemented in other regional hospitals across the country.

GPHC was selected as the pilot site due to its existing use of smaller-scale electronic medical record systems in several departments. Staff in these areas have already received training in digital systems. Additionally, the hospital has made significant investments in modern information technology infrastructure in recent years to support this advancement.

On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, representatives from Riomed met with GPHC officials to introduce the software to the hospital’s management team and key stakeholders. GPHC Chief Executive Officer Robbie Rambarran expressed his support for integrating the system into the hospital’s existing framework and for its eventual nationwide rollout. He noted that the Electronic Health Record system will gradually replace the paper-based records still used in many departments, leading to improved efficiency and better patient outcomes.

Key Benefits of the Electronic Health Record System

  • Comprehensive patient management, allowing physicians to view radiology images, access laboratory results, make referrals, and issue prescriptions within a single system
  • Reduced operational costs by minimising duplication of diagnostic tests, reducing polypharmacy issues, and lowering overall hospital expenses
  • Enhanced accountability through tracking of physician activity, improved documentation, and stronger compliance standards
  • Convenient patient access via a mobile application that allows appointment scheduling and management, reducing long wait times and unnecessary hospital visits, particularly for elderly patients and those with chronic conditions
  • Improved data security and efficiency through secure storage and rapid retrieval of medical records, supporting faster emergency responses and better continuity of care

The introduction of the Electronic Health Record system marks a significant step towards a modern, data-driven healthcare sector in Guyana. The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation remains committed to ensuring a smooth and effective transition that benefits healthcare professionals and patients alike.
