GPHC Accomplishes World’s Longest-Distance Robotic Heart Surgery
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation has etched its name into global medical history.
In a groundbreaking achievement at the (GPHC), Guyana successfully participated in and facilitated the world’s longest-distance robotic telesurgery, a historic milestone in modern medicine, innovation, and healthcare transformation.
Internationally renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Sudhir Srivastava performed a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) procedure on a patient in India while operating from Guyana, using the advanced SSI Mantra 3 robotic surgical system.
Covering approximately 20,000 kilometres via fibre-optic connectivity, the procedure is now recognised as the longest-distance telesurgery ever conducted globally.
Simultaneously, GPHC also achieved another historic first in local robotic surgery.
Led by Dr Hemraj Ramcharran, with support from Dr Bibi Hussain and Dr Jagnanand Ramnarine, the team successfully performed a robotic inguinal hernia repair locally.
With this achievement, Dr Ramcharran becomes the first Guyanese surgeon to perform robotic surgery in Guyana and the English-speaking Caribbean.
Additionally, these surgeries were successful due to the hardworking, dedicated teams who worked tirelessly behind the scenes: Management, Nursing, Biomed, CSSU, IT, Nutrition, etc.
Further advancing the day’s medical milestones, Dr Srivastava also completed a local robotic repair of an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) in a Guyanese patient, another major achievement in cardiac surgical care in the region.
