Our Governance
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) functions within the legal framework of the Public Corporations Act and is duly licensed under the Health Facilities Licensing Act. This statutory foundation provides the hospital with the authority to operate as Guyana’s premier healthcare institution, while ensuring compliance with established laws and regulations.
Strategic oversight is exercised by a Board of Directors, appointed through ministerial authority, which is charged with guiding the hospital’s policies, setting strategic priorities, and ensuring that institutional objectives remain closely aligned with national health priorities. The Board plays a pivotal role in safeguarding governance standards and providing direction on matters of policy, performance, and institutional development. At the ministerial level, the Minister of Health serves as both the licenser and primary overseer of GPHC, ensuring that the institution meets statutory and regulatory obligations while advancing national health objectives. In addition, GPHC is accountable to the National Assembly, further reinforcing its commitment to public transparency and national accountability. The governance model of GPHC is built upon three core pillars:
Ensuring open decision-making and accountability to the public and key stakeholders.
Upholding strong oversight and compliance with legal, financial, and operational standards.
Providing the vision and guidance necessary to position GPHC as Guyana’s leading referral hospital, while strengthening its role in healthcare delivery, education, and research.
Through this governance framework, GPHC continues to advance its mandate of delivering high-quality healthcare while supporting national development in the health sector.
