Almost 200 Years Old
Founded in 1838, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) began as a colonial-era facility serving primarily Europeans and sailors. By the mid-19th century, its services expanded to include indentured labourers and other residents of the colony, marking the start of its transformation into a broader public health institution.
Progressive Growth
In the early 20th century, GPHC introduced specialised facilities such as a maternity ward and a children’s ward. These were especially progressive for their time, offering free maternal care without the requirement of marriage and extending healthcare access to a wider cross-section of society.
Largest Hospital
Over the decades, GPHC continued to grow in scope and capacity. Today, it stands as Guyana’s largest hospital and premier medical institution—the nation’s leading centre for medical teaching, research, emergency services, and professional training. It remains central to both patient care and the development of Guyana’s healthcare workforce.
