About Us

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is Guyana’s premier tertiary healthcare institution, recognised as a Level V national referral hospital and the country’s leading centre for medical education and research.

Our Start

Established in 1838, GPHC has expanded into a modern institution with over 550 beds, managing more than 320,000 outpatient visits and 26,600 inpatient admissions annually. In addition to serving as the national referral hub, GPHC plays a vital role as the District Hospital for Georgetown, supports Region 4, and oversees five primary healthcare centres across the capital and East Coast corridor.

Our Governance

Strategic direction is provided by a Board of Directors, with governance cascading through the Chief Executive Officer and executive management team, who lead oversight, operations, and continuous evaluation of programmes to ensure excellence in care and service delivery.

Our Support

Funded primarily by the Government of Guyana, with added support from partners and affiliates, GPHC is firmly committed to patient care, medical training, and research. It stands as the backbone of Guyana’s public health system—delivering comprehensive, high-quality healthcare while building national capacity and resilience.

Accreditation

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has achieved several significant accreditations that underscore its commitment to quality healthcare delivery.

Pathology Laboratory Certification

In 2025, GPHC’s pathology laboratory was certified to the GYS 170-2021 standard by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards, reflecting its adherence to stringent quality management and testing protocols.

Certified Kidney Transplant Centre

In 2024, GPHC became Guyana’s first officially certified Kidney Transplant Centre, meeting recognised standards for advanced surgical and post-operative care.

National Model for Quality Improvement

As part of a national healthcare quality initiative, GPHC has been recognised as a model institution for patient safety and service improvement, setting benchmarks for other health facilities across the country. In 2023, GPHC earned certification as a Smile Train Centre. Smile Train is an international non-profit organization that partners with hospitals worldwide, providing resources, knowledge, and skills to local partner hospitals and doctors for long-term sustainability in treating cleft conditions.
